Support Scholarships
There are two primary ways to fund a scholarship through the Foundation.
Endowed Scholarships
The endowed scholarship, because of its perpetual nature, is always one of the most popular instruments used by donors. This scenario calls for the donor to establish an endowment fund with the Darton Foundation by making a sizeable donation.
For example, using a projected 5 percent payout, a $5,000 endowment will provide approximately $250 a year to help fund a student’s education.
The amount made available for scholarships naturally increases with the size of the endowment or the donor may choose to add directly to the scholarship each year to increase the size of the award.
Other Scholarships
The donor can also request that Darton Foundation distribute the entire amount of the donation during the first year or a limited number of years.
This approach provides a larger scholarship, but only over a very short period of time. When the money is exhausted, the scholarship no longer exists unless the donor chooses to make subsequent donations.
Many organizations choose to establish this kind of scholarship and make annual donations. Review a list of scholarships already provided by the Foundation or specific college departments.

Why Support Scholarships?
You may not know how hard it is for many students to find the resources to come to school. A Dougherty or Lee County resident pays $1,521 for a full class load per semester. A student taking 16 credit hours will need $1,767 per semester for tuition and approximately $400 for books. This does not include additional costs such as tools, inoculations or supplies that are required by specific programs.
A nursing student pays for their own instruments, supplies and inoculations. In the Allied Health Division, dental hygiene students purchase an instrument kit in addition to tuition and books. In addition, childcare, transportation costs and lost income from time spent off the job are problems many of our students encounter daily. They need scholarship money available through the Foundation to continue their education.
The Darton Financial Aid office estimates only 1 student out of 16 who qualify for a Foundation scholarship receives it due to a lack of Annual Fund giving. The Foundation would require an an additional $25,500 a year to meet the needs of these students.
Scholarships can be unrestricted or based on criteria that specify a program or area of study, such as nursing, health sciences or business, just to name a few. Additional elements can pertain to grade point average, year of study and federal-based financial need. Scholarships may also be based on academic or talent merit.
